What is the _hjSessionUser_* cookie?

Hotjar cookie that is set when a user first lands on a page with the Hotjar script. It is used to persist the Hotjar User ID, unique to that site on the browser. This ensures that behavior in subsequent visits to the same site will be attributed to the same user ID.

Our October 2026 scan found it on 56 sites (2% of the 2,450 we scanned), set before any consent.

How to stop it

Declining non-essential cookies in a site's consent banner should stop _hjSessionUser_* being set on later visits. Blocking third-party cookies in your browser settings stops the third-party kind everywhere, and clearing cookies for a site removes any it already set.
